|The Bible Perspective||GAMBLING|
Is it a sin to play the "Lotto" ?
"Lotto" is a national lottery game in the UK.
Many issues are not specified by name in the Bible. Gambling is one of them. But there are spiritual principles to guide us in deciding the difference between good and evil. Christians are expected to develop spiritually so as to be able to make wise decisions based on these principals..Hebrews 5:14 But strong meat belongs to those who are mature, even those who by reason of use have their senses exercised to discern both good and evil.
ARE YOU SURE IT IS RIGHT TO GAMBLE?
We must be sure that what we want to do is right before we do it. It is a sin to do something we are not sure is all-right.Romans 14:23 And he who doubts is damned if he eat, because he eats not of faith: for whatever is not of faith is sin.
We must not do what we think we have a right to do, if it is a bad influence on others.Romans 14:20 destroy not the work of God for food . All things indeed are pure; but the man is evil who eats something so as to cause others to stumble. 21 It is good neither to eat flesh, nor to drink wine, nor do anything by which your brother is induced, or enticed, or tempted.
WE MUST GROW SPIRITUALLY
We are to develop our judgement by familiarising ourselves with the spiritual teaching in God's word. Proceeding from milk to strong meat, so as to be able to distinguish the difference between good and evil.Romans 10:17 So faith comes from heeding, and heeding by means of God's word.
So we must diligently study God's word so as to not be ashamed.2.Timothy 2:15 Study to show yourself approved to God, a workman who needs not to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth.
GAMBLING APPEALS TO GREED AND THE THRILL OF THE CHANCE OF SUDDENLY BECOMING RICHMatthew 19:23 Then said Jesus to his disciples, Amen I say to you that a rich man will enter into the kingdom of heaven with difficulty. 24 And again I say to you, It is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle, than for a rich man to enter into the kingdom of God.
FOLK WHO WANT TO HAVE A LOT HERE AND NOW ARE NOT REALLY INTERESTED IN GOD OR IN GOING TO HEAVENLuke 12:21 So is he who lays up treasure for himself, and is not rich toward God
Matthew 6:19 Do not store up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moth and rust do corrupt, and where thieves break in and steal: 20 But store up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust do corrupt, and where thieves neither break in nor steal: 21 For where your treasure is, there will also be your heart.
THEIR SOUL'S DESIRES BEING SATISFIED IN THIS LIFE THEY MUST NOT EXPECT ANYTHING HEREAFTERLuke 6:24 But woe to you who are rich! because you have got what you wanted.
WE SHOULD YEARN FOR SPIRITUAL FULFILLMENT NOT PHYSICAL INDULGENCERomans 8:6 For being physically minded is death; but being spiritually minded is life and peace.
THOSE WHO PURSUE PHYSICAL POSSESSIONS AND PLEASURE ARE HEADING FOR SPIRITUAL DISASTERRomans 8:6 For being physically minded is death ...
1 Timothy 6:9 But those who are determined to be rich fall into temptation and a snare, and into many foolish and harmful desires, which drown men in destruction and ruin. 10 For the love of money is the root of all kinds of evil: which whilst some coveted after, they have been seduced from the faith, and pierced themselves through with many sorrows.
Galatians 6:7 Be not deceived; God is not mocked: for whatever a man sows, that he will also reap. 8 For he who sows to his physical nature will of the physical nature reap corruption; but he who sows to the Spirit will of the Spirit reap life everlasting.
AND THEY ARE UNLIKELY TO BE SATISFIEDEcclesiastes 5:10 He who loves silver will not be satisfied with silver; nor he who loves abundance with increase: this is also vanity. 11 When goods increase, they are increased who eat them: and what good is there to the owners thereof, save looking at them with their eyes? 12 The sleep of a labouring man is sweet, whether he eats little or much: but the abundance of the rich will not let him sleep.
GOD GAVE MAN EMPLOYMENT:Genesis 2:15 And the LORD God took the man, and put him into the garden of Eden to dress it and to keep it.
Proverbs 12:11 He who tills his land will be satisfied with bread: but he who follows vain persons is void of understanding.
THOSE OF US WHO CAN SHOULD EARN OUR LIVING NOBLY1.Thessalonians 4:11 And that you are eager to be tranquil, and to do your own business, and to work with your own hands, as we commanded you;
2.Thessalonians 3:10 For even when we were with you, we commanded you this, that if any would not work, neither should he eat. 11 For we hear that there are some who walk disorderly among you, not working not at all, but are busybodies. 12 Now those who are like that we command and exhort by our Lord Jesus Christ, that they work with quietness, and eat their own bread.
SO AS TO BE A GOOD ROLL MODEL1.Corinthians 8:12 But when you sin in that manner against the brethren, and damage their weak conscience, you sin against Christ. 13 So, if food makes my brother go wrong, I will eat no meat whilst the world stands, lest I make my brother go wrong.
AND SO THAT THE WORLD WILL RESPECT US1.Thessalonians 4:12 That you might walk honestly toward those who are outside, and that you might be short of nothing.
NOT ONLY TO PROVIDE FOR OUR OWN NEEDS BUT ALSO TO BE ABLE TO HELP THE DISADVANTAGEDEphesians 4:28 Let him who stole steal no more: but rather let him labour, working with his hands the thing which is good, that he may have to give to him who needs.
Proverbs 30:7 I have required of you two things; don't withhold them from me before I die: Remove vanity and lies far from me: give me neither poverty nor riches; feed me with my allowance of food 9 lest I be full, and deny you, and say, Who is the LORD? or lest I be poor, and steal, and take the name of my God in vain.
BEING DEVOTED TO GOD AND BEING CONTENT WITH HAVING WHAT WE NEED IS SPIRITUALLY SATISFYING1.Timothy 6:6 ... devoutness with contentment is great gain. 7 For we brought nothing into this world, and it is certain we can carry nothing out. 8 So let us be content with having food and shelter/clothing.
Philippians 4:11 Not that I speak in respect of want: for I have learned, whatever state I am in, to be content with it. 12 I know both how to be humbled, and I know how to be affluent: every where and in all things I am shown how to be full and also hungry, both to be affluent and to be destitute. 13 I am able to cope with all situations through Christ who strengthens me.
WE SHOULD FLEE BASE DESIRES SUCH AS GAMBLING AND STRIVE TO BE SPIRITUAL1 Timothy 6:9 But those who are determined to be rich fall into temptation and a snare, and into many foolish and harmful desires, which drown men in destruction and ruin. 10 For the love of money is the root of all kinds of evil: which whilst some coveted after, they have been seduced from the faith, and pierced themselves through with many sorrows. 11 But you, O man of God, flee these things; and follow after righteousness, devoutness, faith, love, perseverance, meekness. 12 Fight the good fight of faith, lay hold on eternal life, to which you are also called, and hast professed a good profession before many witnesses.
WOULD THE LORD JESUS GAMBLE - WOULD HE APROVE OF US GAMBLING ?Philippians 2:4 Look not every man on his own things, but every man also on the things of others. 5 Let this mind be in you, which was also in Christ Jesus: ........
Romans15:1 So we who are strong ought to aleviate the handicaps of the vulnerable, and not be pleasing ourselves. 2 because every one of must strive to please his aquantance for his good in order to build him up. 3 For even the Messiah [Christ] did not please himself ....
IN ALL THINGS WE SHOULD STRIVE TO BE CHRISTLIKE.
