The Evil Husbandmen
Hazrat Isa* related this tragedy to a crowd because
there were religious and political leaders there who wanted to kill him:

'There was a man who planted a vineyard, put it in the charge of professional cultivators [husbandmen] and went abroad for a while. When it was time he sent a servant to the cultivators to collect the fruit from the vineyard, but the cultivators beat him up and sent him away empty handed. Then he sent another servant, they beat him as well, treated him with contempt, and sent him away empty handed. So he sent a third servant and they actually wounded him and threw him out of the vineyard.'

'Then the landlord of the vineyard said, "What shall I do? - I will send my dear son. Surely, when they see him they will take notice of him." But when the cultivators saw him, they reasoned with each other, saying, "This is the heir. Come on, let's kill him, so that we can have the inheritance."  So they dragged him out of the vineyard and murdered him.'

Hazrat Isa asked the crowd: 'So what will the landlord of the vineyard do to them?'

The people replied, "He will come and destroy these cultivators, and entrust the vineyard to others."

When the religious and political leaders heard that, they said: "That could never happen !"

Then Hazrat Isa turned his eyes on them, and said, 'What is this then that is written in the scriptures? - "The stone which the builders rejected, that same stone has become the stone from which the rest of the building is set out." # Everyone who stumbles over that stone will be injured; but on absolutely anyone it falls, it will grind him to powder.'

[Luke 20:9-18]

Hazrat Isa is the stone from which the rest of his building (his followers) is set out.
