The Rich Man and the Poor Man
Hazrat Isa* related this story to a crowd because there were religious leaders there who, because they were greedy, scoffed at him when he said "You cannot serve God and serve wealth." [Luke 16:13-14]

Now there was a certain rich man, who wore purple robes and fine linen, and enjoyed the luxuries of life every day.

Also there was a particular beggar called Lazarus - full of sores - who used to be placed near the rich man's gateway, desperate to be fed with the crumbs which dropped off the rich man’s table - even dogs came and licked his sores.

It happened that the beggar died, and was carried away by the angels into Abraham’s bosom.

The rich man also died - and was buried.

In Hades, being in torment, the rich man lifts up his eyes and sees Abraham in the distance, and Lazarus in his bosom. So he called out saying, "Father Abraham, have mercy on me, and send Lazarus, so that he might dip the tip of his finger in water, and cool my tongue, because I am in agony in this flame."

But Abraham said, "Son, remember that you in your life received all your good things, just likewise Lazarus received bad things. Now however - he is consoled - but you are in agony. Moreover - in addition to all this - there is a permanent gaping chasm between you and us, for which reason those who would cross over from here to you, cannot. Neither can those who would want to come from there, cross over it to us."

To which the rich man said, "So I plead with you father, that you would send him to my father’s house - because I have five brothers - that he might tell them what he knows, in case they also finish up in this place of torment."

Abraham said to him, "They have the writings of Moses and the prophets, let them take notice of them." but he said, "No, father Abraham: but if someone went to them from the dead, they will repent." In response Abraham said to him, "If they don't take notice of Moses and the prophets, they will not be convinced even if someone rises from the dead."

[Luke 16:19-31]

Hazrat Isa rose from the dead - yet only a few believe him.
