| * the Jews would count part as a whole | |||||||||||||||||||
The Vatican church in Rome, and others, celebrates the crucifixion of the Lord Jesus on a Friday, which probably originated from a celebration of the pagan goddess of fertility variously known as "Diana", "Ishtar" and also "Astarte", giving rise to the non-Biblical word Easter. This has lead to confusion because according to the Bible the Lord Jesus was in the tomb 3 days and 3 nights and arose before daybreak on the first day of the week - i.e. on Sunday morning (Matthew 12:40). When the words 'day' and 'night' are used together, 'day' refers to the hours of daylight and 'night' refers to the hours of darkness (Genesis 1:5). Even using the Jewish way of reckoning a part for a whole it is not possible to count 3 nights between Friday and Sunday. If, as they claim, the Lord Jesus died during Friday daytime, he would have been in the tomb Friday night and most of Saturday night - by Jewish reckoning that comes to no more than two nights.
The Bible does not say that the Lord Jesus was slain on a Friday. What it does say is that the Jews wanted the bodies to be removed from the cross before sunset because of a pending Sabbath . However this Sabbath was not the regular weekly Sabbath. It was a High Day Sabbath ( John19:31).
If the Lord was slain and buried on a Thursday then the problem disappears and all Bible references to the period time the Lord was in the tomb are satisfied. Friday would be the High Day Sabbath and Saturday would be the regular weekly Sabbath, both preceded by a preparation day (Thursday and Friday -as well as the preparation for the Passover on Wednesday). That would mean that the Lord Jesus was slain and placed in the tomb on a Thursday (one day - using the Jewish reckoning part of a day for a whole day). He was in the tomb on Thursday night (one night), Friday daytime (two days), Friday night (two nights), Saturday daytime (three days) and Saturday night, rising before daybreak Sunday, (three nights - using the Jewish reckoning part of a night for a whole night) - i.e. 3 days and 3 nights.

RISE "THE THIRD DAY"
When 'day' is used on its own of a weekday it refers to the whole 24 hour day as in Genesis 1:5 ('... And the evening and the morning were the first day').th trith 'hmera
Matthew 16:21 From that time forth began Jesus to shew unto his disciples, how that he must go unto Jerusalem, and suffer many things of the elders and chief priests and scribes, and be killed, and be raised again the third day.

Mark 9:31 For he taught his disciples, and said unto them, The Son of man is delivered into the hands of men, and they shall kill him; and after that he is killed, he shall rise the third day.

Luke 18:33 And they shall scourge him, and put him to death: and the third day he will rise again.Since hypothetically, the phrase 'the first day he will rise' would not mean he rose the same day that he was buried but the day after, so 'the third day he will rise' has to mean he will rise the third day after after he was buried.

Mark 8:31 And he began to teach them, that the Son of man must suffer many things, and be rejected of the elders, and of the chief priests, and scribes, and be killed, and after three days rise again.Sunday is the second day after Friday. THE LORD AROSE BEFORE DAYBREAK
Mark 16:2 And very early in the morning the first day of the week, they came unto the sepulchre at the rising of the sun. 3 And they said among themselves, Who shall roll us away the stone from the door of the sepulchre? 4 And when they looked, they saw that the stone was rolled away: for it was very great. 5 And entering into the sepulchre, they saw a young man sitting on the right side, clothed in a long white garment; and they were affrighted. 6 And he saith unto them, Be not affrighted: Ye seek Jesus of Nazareth, which was crucified: he is risen; he is not here: behold the place where they laid him.

HIGH DAYS TO BE SACRED
John 19:31 The Jews therefore, because it was the preparation, that the bodies should not remain upon the cross on the sabbath day, (for that sabbath day was an high day,) besought Pilate that their legs might be broken, and that they might be taken away.
SACREDNESS OF HIGH DAYS IGNORED
Matthew 26:2 [Jesus said] Ye know that after two days is the feast of the passover, and the Son of man is betrayed to be crucified. 3 Then assembled together the chief priests, and the scribes, and the elders of the people, unto the palace of the high priest, who was called Caiaphas, 4 And consulted that they might take Jesus by subtilty, and kill him. 5 But they said, Not on the feast day, lest there be an uproar among the people.
Luke 22:1 Now the feast of unleavened bread drew nigh, which is called the Passover. 2 And the chief priests and scribes sought how they might kill him; for they feared the people. 3 Then entered Satan into Judas surnamed Iscariot, being of the number of the twelve. 4 And he went his way, and communed with the chief priests and captains, how he might betray him unto them. 5 And they were glad, and covenanted to give him money. 6 And he promised, and sought opportunity to betray him unto them in the absence of the multitude.
v.7 Then came the day of unleavened bread, when the passover must be killed.
47 And while he yet spake, behold a multitude, and he that was called Judas, one of the twelve, went before them, and drew near unto Jesus to kiss him. 48 But Jesus said unto him, Judas, betrayest thou the Son of man with a kiss?
52 Then Jesus said unto the chief priests, and captains of the temple, and the elders, which were come to him, Be ye come out, as against a thief, with swords and staves? 53 When I was daily with you in the temple, ye stretched forth no hands against me: but this is your hour, and the power of darkness.
John 7:37 In the last day, that great day of the feast, Jesus stood and cried, saying, If any man thirst, let him come unto me, and drink. 43 ... there was a division among the people because of him. 44 And some of them would have taken him; but no man laid hands on him.
45 Then came the officers to the chief priests and Pharisees; and they said unto them, Why have ye not brought him? 46 The officers answered, Never man spake like this man.
Acts 12:2 And he [Herod] killed James the brother of John with the sword. 3 And because he saw it pleased the Jews, he proceeded further to take Peter also. (Then were the days of unleavened bread.) 4 And when he had apprehended him, he put him in prison, and delivered him to four quaternions of soldiers to keep him; intending after the Passover to bring him forth to the people. 5 Peter therefore was kept in prison ...
